A. Pengertian, Tujuan, Ciri, Descriptive Text dan Contohnya

Sebelum melihat Apa itu definisi descriptive text secara utuh, mari kita pahami apa yang dimaksud dengan kata descriptive itu sendiri. Descriptive adalah kata sifat yang jika kita artikan dalam bahasa Indonesia berarti deskripsi (gambaran). Jika kamu diminta untuk mendeskripsikan sebuah benda, itu artinya kamu harus menggambarkan benda yang dimaksud baik dari ukuran, warna dan lain sebagainya. Menurut Wikipedia, yang dimaksud dengan Descriptive text adalah: “satu kaedah upaya pengolahan data menjadi sesuatu yang dapat diutarakan secara jelas dan tepat dengan tujuan agar dapat dimengerti oleh orang yang tidak langsung mengalaminya sendiri”. Jadi yang dimaksud dengan descriptive text adalah sebuah tulisan atau teks yang menggambarkan sifat-sifat yang melekat pada sesuatu, baik itu manusia, hewan, tumbuhan, ataupun benda mati seperti rumah, mobil dan lain sebagainya.

B. Tujuan Descriptive Text

Dilihat dari pengertiannya di atas, maka sebenarnya kita sudah bisa memahami apa itu tujuan descriptive text. Tujuannya tidak lain adalah untuk menggambarkan segala sesuatu baik itu manusia, hewan, tumbuhan atau benda mati dengan sifat yang melekat padanya seperti ukuran, jenis, warna, dan sebagainya sehingga pembaca atau reader dapat mengetahui seperti apa sesuatu itu dari gambaran yang kita sampaikan meskipun ia belum pernah melihatnya.

C. Struktur Text (Generic Structure)

Descriptive text mempunyai aturan tersendiri dalam penulisannya, termasuk dalam struktur atau susunan yang harus ditulis secara urut. Jika kamu diminta untuk membuat descriptive text, maka pastikan susunannya adalah sebagai berikut:

1. Identification: Bagian ini – pada paragraf pertama – tujuannya adalah untuk mengidentifikasi sesuatu yang ingin dideskripsikan atau digambarkan. Penjelasan mudahnya, indentification berfungsi untuk memperkenalkan kepada pembaca tentang objek atau sesuatu yang akan kita gambarkan sebelum kita beritahu tentang sifat-sifatnya. Tujuannya agar jangan sampai pembaca salah orang. Kita mau menggambarkan mobil misalnya, tapi pembaca mengiranya motor.
   Contoh: kamu diminta untuk menggambarkan mobil barumu, maka isi identification-nya adalah: Ayahku baru saja membelikan mobil baru. Mobil ini sebenarnya sudah lama aku idam-idamkan, tapi baru sekarang ayahku membelikannya. (Berarti yang akan digambarkan adalah mobilku, bukan mobil orang lain).
2. Description: Bagian ini – pada paragraf kedua dan seterusnya – berisi tentang sifat-sifat yang melekat pada sesuatu yang sudah kamu kenalkan pada pembaca pada paragraf pertama.
   Misal (melanjutkan tentang mobil di atas): Mobil baruku ini merupakan mobil sport keluaran terbaru dari Toyota. Jumlah bangkunya hanya dua, satu untuk sopir dan satunya untuk penumpang, begitu juga dengan pintunya. Mobil ini bisa melesat hingga kecepatan 500 km/jam, hampir sama dengan kecepatan pesawat berjenis Foker.

D. Ciri-Ciri Descriptive Text

Ciri-ciri ini penting untuk kamu perhatikan agar ketika menulis descriptive text tidak salah. Jadi pastikan kamu menggunakan ciri-ciri berikut ini ketika akan menulis menggunakan genre descriptive text:

1. Menggunakan Simple Present Tense. Kenapa menggunakan simple present tense? hal ini karena kita akan menggambarkan sebuah fakta atau kebenaran yang melekat pada sesuatu atau orang. Dan salah satu fungsi dari simple present adalah untuk menggambarkan sebuah fakta atau kebenaran (contoh fakta: matahari itu panas). Oleh karena itu kamu harus selalu menggunakan kata kerja bentuk pertama (verb-1).
   Misal kamu akan menggambarkan sifat-sifat mobil baru kamu: The color of my car is black, it can run up to 500 km/hour.
2. Karena fungsinya adalah untuk menggambarkan sesuatu dengan menjelaskan sifat-sifatnya, maka dalam descriptive text akan banyak dijumpai kata sifat (adjective), seperti handsome, beautiful, tall, small, big, atau jika kata sifat tersebut berasal dari kata kerja, maka kamu akan mendapati tambahan -ve, -ing, -nt di belakangnya,
   Contoh:
   Create (membuat) > creative (orang yang pintar membuat sesuatu).
   Interest (menarik) > interesting (sesuatu yang menarik)
3. Dalam descriptive text kita juga akan sering menjumpai relating verb (kata kerja penghubung) yaitu is (seperti pada ciri nomor 1). Is dalam bahasa Indonesia sering diartikan dengan “adalah”. Karena tujuan atau fungsi descriptive text adalah untuk menggambarkan, maka pasti kita akan sering menjumpai kata adalah (is). His name is Andy (namanya adalah Andy), his height is 160 cm (tingginya adalah 160 cm).

E. Contoh Descriptive Text dan Penjelasannya.

Contoh 1: Borobudur Temple.
Borobudur is Hindu – Budhist temple. It was build in the nineth century under Sailendra dynasty of ancient Mataram kingdom. Borobudur is located in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia.
Borobudur is well-known all over the world. Its construction is influenced by the Gupta architecture of India. The temple is constructed on a hill 46 m high and consist of eight step like stone terrace. The first five terrace are square and surrounded by walls adorned with Budist sculpture in bas-relief. The upper three are circular. Each of them is with a circle of bell shape-stupa. The entire adifice is crowned by a large stupa at the centre at the centre of the top circle. The way to the summit extends through some 4.8 km of passage and starways. The design of borobudur which symbolizes the structure of universe influences temples at Angkor, Cambodia.
Penjelasan:

1. Paragraf pertama: Identification, menggambarkan sepintas tentang Candi Borobudur yang akan dideskripsikan sehingga pembaca tidak akan salah paham tentang candi yang sedang dibicarakan. Bahwa candi yang dimaksud adalah candi yang bernama Borobudur, yang berlokasi di Magelang, Jawa Tengah.
2. Paragraf kedua: Description, berisi tentang penjelasan atau deskripsi Candi Borobudur dengan memaparkan sifat-sifatnya seperti:
   – berada di bukit dengan ketinggian 46 meter dan terdiri dari 8 tingkat seperti teras.
   – 5 tingkat pertama berbentuk kotak (square) dan dikelilingin tembok.
   – 3 tingkat paling atas berbentuk bulat (circular).

DESCRIPTIVE TEXT adalah bacaan yang menjelaskan sesuatu. Fungsi bacaan ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan atau menjelaskan dengan baik tentang suatu hal, bisa berupa seseorang, hewan, benda, tempat, dll.
Bila Anda ingin pembaca membayangkan sesuatu, Anda bisa menggunakan bacaan deskriptif untuk menjelaskannya.
Agar lebih mudah mengenali descriptive text, Anda bisa memerhatikan struktur yang biasanya ada dalam bacaan tersebut, antara lain:

• Identifikasi: mengidentifikasi atau mengenali sesuatu yang akan dijelaskan.
• Deskripsi: menjelaskan hal tersebut berdasarkan bagian-bagiannya, kualitas, atau karakteristiknya.

Selain itu, perhatikan pula bahwa descriptive text kerap kali menggunakan kata be dan have, yang juga kerap digunakan dalam bentuk simple present tense. Namun, bila hal yang akan Anda jelaskan sudah tidak lagi ada, Anda bisa menggunakan past tense untuk menggambarkannya.

MISS APRIL

Miss April is my English teacher in kindergarten and she teaches my class for a whole year.

Miss April wears square glasses and always cuts her hair short. She’s very tall and very skinny. She says she doesn’t like her skinny body but doesn’t know how to gain weight either. She loves wearing sneakers to school, always wears polo shirt and a pair of black pants. She has not married yet and doens’t have any children on her own. She says that’s why she teaches kindergarten, so that she can be near a lot of kids.

She is very smart and a very fun teacher. She teaches us a lot of things from animals to house equipments. She loves to play with us, teaches us new words, how to spell the words that we just learn, and sometimes she brings her ukulele to the class and sings us children songs, such as Itsy Bitsy Spider, Twinkle-Twinkle Little Star, and If You’re Happy song.

Deskripsi	Bu April mengenakan kacamata kotak dan selalu memotong pendek rambutnya. Ia amat tinggi dan amat kurus. Ia bilang bahwa ia tidak suka dengan tubuh kurusnya tapi ia juga tidak tahu bagaimana cara untuk bertambah gemuk. My favorite room in the whole world is my own bedroom in my parents’ house.

It has everything that I want in this life: a comfortable bed that faces a wide window on the east side of the room. So, when I wake up in the morning and swipe the window curtain, the light of sunrise enters the room little by little, creates a beautiful silhouette and warms the whole room. On the right corner of room near the window, there’s a study desk that was once my father’s. Next to that desk, there’s a white wardrobe where I put all of my clothes.

In front of the wardrobe, at the other side of the room, there’s a yellow bookshelf where I put half of my book collection. I choose the collor yellow so it matches the collor of my bedroom wall. Next to the bookshelf, I have a dressing table. And next to that dressing table is where I put my guitar. It’s a fifteen-year-old guitar but it still sounds great and I love it so much.

Deskripsi	Di sana ada segalanya yang aku inginkan dalam hidupku: tempat tidur nyaman yang menghadap sebuah jendela lebar di sisi timur kamar. Sehingga, saat aku bangun di pagi hari dan menyibakkan tirainya, sinar matahari masuk ke dalam kamar sedikit demi sedikit, membentuk siluet yang cantik dan menghangatkan seluruh kamar. Di sisi kanan kamar di dekat jendela, ada meja belajar yang dulunya milik ayahku. Di sebelah meja tersebut, ada lemari pakaian putih di mana aku menaruh seluruh bajuku. Di depan lemari tersebut, di sisi lain kamar ini, ada sebuah rak buku kuning tempat aku menaruh sebagian koleksi bukuku. Aku memilih warna kuning agar cocok dengan warna dinding kamarku. Di samping rak buku tersebut ada meja rias. Dan di samping meja rias itulah aku menaruh gitarku. Gitar berusia 15 tahun yang masih bersuara bagus dan sangat kusayangi.

Sehingga dapat kita simpulkan bahwa untuk menulis descriptive text, perhatikan:

• Fokus pada orang-orang yang secara spesifik terkait dalam tulisan.
• Gunakan simple present tense, tapi bila hal tersebut sudah tidak lagi ada maka gunakan past tense.
• Gunakan descriptive adjectives.
• Gunakan frasa nomina yang detil untuk menggambarkan subjek.
• Gunakan action verbs.
• Gunakan adverbia untuk memberi info tambahan tentang suatu perilaku.
• Gunakan bahasa figuratif atau perumpaan.

DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

 

Ciri-ciri Descriptive Text :

• Verb yang digunakan yaitu attribute verb, seperti be (am, is, are)
• Tense yang digunakan yaitu simple present tense
• Hanya fokus pada satu objek tersebut.

Losari beach is a beautiful beach and located on the edge city of Makassar. It is located only about 3 km from the center of Makassar (Karebosi Park). Kediri is a name of a town. It is situated in a valley between the Kelud and Willis mountains and inhabited by about 1.3 million people. In the centre of the town there is a large hill which is called the Dathok Mountain. Because of the topography of the region, Kediri is called a chilly town by the locals. There is a big river called Brantas cutting off the centre of the town.

Beside the temples, Kediri is also famous for its products like cigarettes and a special kind of tofu or bean curd. This highly nutritious food is delicacy of Kediri and has a distinctive taste. The cigarettes factory dominates the town economy and employs the majority of the women labor force. Kediri and the cigarettes factory are inseparable and it is considered the biggest cigarette factory in Indonesia. Most of the local people work in this factory. Those who do not work here are farmers or traders.

Masjid Sultan Suriansyah
Masjid Sultan Suriansyah is a historical mosque. Built 300 years ago, this building is the oldest mosque in South Kalimantan. The mosque is located in the North Kuin Village of Banjarmasin. It was built in the reign of Sultan Suriansyah known as Pangeran Samudera. He was the first Banjarnese King who converted into Islam. This mosque was found on the bank of the Kuin River, near KampungKraton, which was destroyed by the Dutch colonial.

The construction of Masjid Sultan Suriansyah was unique. The roof is layered. It took the Banjar's past architecture before Islam came. Different from any other old mosques in Banjar, the mihrab has its own roof, separated from the main building.

Bale Kambang
Bale Kambang is a small village in the Southern coast of East Java, seventy kilometers from Malang town and two hours' drive from South. It is well known for its long beautiful white sandy beach as well as the similarity of its temple to the one of Tanah Lot in Bali.
